Chapter 25

Tithes ; Is It of God for Today?

Before we delve into this issue, let’s turn our focus on Abram. Hebrews 11 states that; “By faith, he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

Do we think Abram had a ‘revelation’? Abram left his ‘home’, his father’s house and lived in tents looking for a city, which has foundations, the builder and maker being God. He was not looking for an ‘earthly’ city, but the one from Heaven. This is important to comprehend. The revelation that he had is not spelled out, but he ended up trusting God with not only his life, but the entire future not only of his family after the flesh, but also of those born of ‘that faith’ which he had in God. Abram was a spiritual man, the possessor of the promises.

Melchizedek the Priest and King of Salem came out and met Abram, after the recovery of Lot and the other captives, bringing him the elements of communion. After sharing these items, Melchizedek saluted Abram stating; “Blessed be Abram of the Most High God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all”.  The persons recovered by Abram were the ones who were tithed on their recovered possessions. There is not a record in scripture of Abram paying tithes of his goods.

(Have you heard that preached on?)

Abram was an extremely wealthy individual in cattle, silver and gold. If Abram had paid tithes of his goods, there would be a reference to ‘who’ it was paid to, why, and that ‘who’ would be the ‘greater’ than Abram. In this event, Melchizedek, a King and High Priest is the greater and a foreshadow of Christ. In this he received the tithe of the spoils from Abram.

Why did the King of Salem, King of Righteousness, receive tithes on ‘others property’, the heathen, the unbelievers and not on the possessions of the one who possessed the promises?

This is worthy of thought before we presumptuously teach or preach that;

‘Abram tithed’ before the law was instituted…..

Was the tithe instituted by God based on ‘religious ritual’ or spiritual obligation?

Or was it based on something completely different???

Let’s listen to Samuel.

Samuel explained to the Israelites that the king they had asked for would take 10% of everything they had to use as it pleased him.

This 10% of the people’s substance or increase belonged to the king in whose kingdom they resided; it was the king’s due. This was not a ‘commandment’ of God for all kings. This was not a ‘spiritual precept’, it was a system used to maintain the King’s Lifestyle and the King’s House. In the same way that taxes are assessed to maintain a system of government, the tenth, or tithe was assessed to maintain the Monarchy. This was not a ‘spiritual teaching’, or a ‘spiritual principle’, this was to the Israelites the ‘be careful what you ask for’ speech. This prophet of God, servant of God NEVER said if they did not pay the King, they were robbing God, because they weren’t, they were robbing the king!

We can believe Melchizedek was Christ manifested in the Old Testament (Jesus said Abraham saw His day and rejoiced, this would explain Melchizedek offering Abram communion), or a type of Christ, in either case, Melchizedek was a Priest of the Most High God and a King. As a king, he warranted 10% of the recovered spoils.  God through Samuel told the Israelites that wanted a ‘King like the other nations’ that their King would take a 10th of their sheep, produce, and of all their goods as he saw fit. That the King would also pick from among them of their sons and daughters to fulfill his will and he would take of their substance as needed to take care of his house. He also stated he would take of the Israelites land, their inheritance and give to his servants at his discretion. This was not based on the law, or on faith, it was based on the fact the king and HIS house were due 10% by those in their kingdom. Pay close attention.  Let’s now review what Balaam told Balak by the Spirit of God long before Samuel’s word regarding the nation of Israel;

 Numbers 23 and 24 (NLT)

“No misfortune is in his plan for Jacob; no trouble is in store for Israel.

For the LORD their God is with them; he has been proclaimed their king.

“Water will flow from their buckets; their offspring have all they need.

Their king will be greater than Agag; their kingdom will be exalted.”

God is and was the King of Israel long before they had, a king as other nations.

The tenth belonged to God long before the Law was given, as God was already their king.  When God chose the Levites and requisitioned 10% of all the Israelites had, as their King He was instituting a collection of what was already due Him. It was called ‘the tithes’.

Under the Law, the tithes belonged to God, as also did the tribe of priests that collected the tithe. Did we get that? The tithes belonged to the King, the Levites received them and had a right to collect them, but the King, not the Levites (priests) was the one to whom the tithes were owed!. The priests and their families had no inheritance in the land as the other tribes, they COULD not have an inheritance in ‘the land’, they were ‘owned’ by God, for His pleasure, for His service, in His house, just as stated in 1 Samuel. The Levites were to ‘possess’ a portion of the other tribe's inheritance, having cities with land to grow crops, raise cattle, living as sharecroppers, as servants themselves living on land requisitioned from others by their king.  It becomes very clear what the tithes was intended for, what its purpose was, and why it was collected. The Temple was God’s House, the dwelling place of the King of Kings, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  To enter the presence of the King with a wrong heart, a wrong sacrifice, inappropriate attire, was to invite death. It was the King’s House much more than if it had been King Solomon’s house or King Ahasuerus’s house in Esther.

We now understand the tithe was collected so God could provide for his servants and His Priests, and also for the poor, and the stranger. The tithe belonged to God, simple and set in stone if you did not pay tithes; you robbed the King, God

(you have heard that preached on!!).

Tithes were never mentioned in the Old Testament for investment properties, home ownership, and/or retirement programs for the priests. The priests were not their own, and God was their reward, their entire life belonged to God (Selah). I think we are beginning to get the picture. Tithes belonged to God for His purpose in His House. The prophet, King, or shepherd were never entitled to, nor ever approached the Temple of God asking for a portion of His tithe.  Finally, tithes were never used as an incentive to ‘curry’ favor with God, as the tenth was His already, even while it was still in the people's possession.

Moving forward to Jesus Christ;

Two Houses

Jesus had told the Jews, destroy this temple, and I will raise it up in three days. This temple he referred to was His Body. This IS the House of God.

Remember the city Abram was looking for?

Later, overlooking Jerusalem, Jesus wept, declaring ‘your house’ is left to you desolate.

It was and is a change of venue.

God no longer would dwell ‘among the people’ in a house made with men’s hands. The New Covenant was in effect, the Old is done away with.

So here we have two very distinct and separate houses identified.

“And Moses verily was faithful in his entire house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end” (Hebrews 3).

Now that the Old is done away with, the house, the need to have servants stand before the King on behalf of others, is over. The need to support people standing in our ‘stead’ is over. The need to support a ‘temple’ made with hands is over…

You may say Jesus is the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords,

and that he is entitled to the tenth.

I would agree with you wholeheartedly if I were not part of the Body of Christ!

Is the Church bone of His bone, flesh of His flesh?  Will a wife pay tithes to her husband? Did Abram collect tithes of Sarah?  Or are they ‘One’, as in one flesh? Isn’t the Body of Christ supposed to take care of the Body in love?

Wasn’t this the purpose of the fivefold ministry, the

Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher

to bring this about?

“For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.”

Is there something here the body is to grow into?

Understand this, this present day “Minister/King” finance system is over.

When a church leader preaches tithes, he is building his Kingly portfolio. Per the Word of God, if he is operating like a Levitical Priest in the ‘House of God’ under the Old Covenant with God as his King fulfilling the Law’s commandment and;

‘has a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law’,

and is pretending to stand before God on your behalf. With this understanding, any collector of tithes on behalf of God is a fraud. The tithe belonged to the ‘King’, so there would be a provision in the King’s house and under the Law provision in God’s house, the earthly temple. If a man is collecting a tithe, he is acknowledging; his own kingdom, not The House that Moses was faithful in… as it has been declared to be ‘over’...

He is definitely NOT acknowledging Christ as a Son over HIS Own house… “Howbeit the Most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet…” How ridiculous to think that a house built with hands is the house of God? Is this not absolutely the most flagrant foolishness before God that can be imagined? The ‘Temple made without hands’ is the focus of God, it is the essence of the Apostle Paul and the Apostle Peter’s teachings.

Man’s pride makes ‘building his ministry his work’ with his name and his image at stake. The tithes are collected for his ‘ministry’, the support of HIS House,  the church building, salaries, vehicles, vacations, children’s educations, retirement investments, etc.

(Some Pastors and so-called apostles actually have servants working in THEIR house as ‘handmaidens of the Lord’. The ‘king’ mentality is the belief that you are ‘special’ before God and warrant special treatment).

None of these items were ever to be the purpose of the tithes. If we think the tithes had to be adapted to fit our ‘culture’, that would be the culture of unbelief, faithless and not holding the Head of the church.

But go ahead; pay your ‘tithes’ to the ministry,

But now your finances are cursed, as you will be doing it in disobedience.

Before the Living God of whom I stand,

This corrupt system of ‘kings’ taking money from the Body of Christ is finished.

Leaders and Preachers are teaching ‘tithing’ as that is the message they have been taught to teach, not hearing from God. This was addressed earlier, Jesus stated to Peter after Peter received the revelation of who Jesus was; “Upon This Rock, I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it”. Divorce, premature death, sickness, ministerial affairs, strife, hypocrisy are rife in the assemblies as men teach what they have been taught, devoid of the Holy Spirit and unable to receive revelation from God.

Men are teaching men, giving approval to each other

not having the approval that comes from God.

Never in the new Covenant is there covenant demand for part of our income,

Or even a part of your life.

The whole of our world has been bought at Calvary, we are not our own, we are bought with a price that covered our entire world, 100%, we have been paid for with the precious blood of the Lamb (1 Corinthians 6). To give 10% of our finances as a law based tithe into a system that is corrupting the Gospel of Jesus Christ for financial gain will cost us tremendously financially, as we are supporting a system that is stating what Jesus did at Calvary was inadequate, and was abolished in His resurrection. Especially if our mentality is 10% for the Lord, 90% is mine apart from God. Let me rephrase that, paying tithes under the law is supporting a man’s kingdom that is not of God.

Our responsibility before God is a personal relationship. Our responsibility is to get to a place IN CHRIST where we fellowship HIM. Remember that couple that sold property promising the resulting finances to God? Ananias and Sapphira? Recall what Peter said by the Holy Spirit? That is the critical part to comprehend, ‘by the Holy Spirit ‘. By the Holy Spirit, he said this.

“While it was your own, was it not to do with as you pleased?”

Their attempted deception had deadly results. Just as Balaam thought that God did not see him, they promised something to God, then held back a part of the committed thing for themselves. Have we ‘given our life to Christ’?

Do we understand that while it was our own, it was ours to do with as we pleased?

Before God we are not our own, we are to live as though..we were bought, with a price.

Have we deceived ourselves?

This is on YOU and ME. Paying 10% will not release us, it will not buy God off, and in fact, it is offensive to Him. Paying tithes to please a Pastor is being a ‘man pleaser’, again, we are asking for financial ruin.  Giving is an act of obedience out of relationship and love unto the Lord Jesus Christ from the heart, it is not an obligation, to “your church’, you ARE the church; you are to be the Temple of God. Giving is to be done in obedience to our head, which is the Lord Jesus Christ. You and I are members of the Body of Christ, and it is to function as a body, not a business, or based on the Law, it IS the Body of Christ! Ephesians 4; “From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.”

We are to be the House of God, His place of rest, His Habitation. We are HIS HOUSE that HE is FAITHFUL over, whose house are we, as we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end! If we are bone of His bone, and flesh of His flesh, He is OUR provider, and He takes care of each of us using each of us as members of the Body in the Body to the Body! As Spirit Filled believers we ARE the Temple built without hands, the Body of Christ.

This body is to function in relation to its Head, our Lord Jesus Christ in love. If one member suffers, the whole body is affected, and I am affected, as well as you. Taking financial care of those who minister of the things of God is handled as the Head of The Church knows what is needed in the Body, and able to move in and through the body supplying each need through its members.

Remember, this is ‘why’ the Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher gifts were given to the Body?

At the risk of being redundant, the Temple of God is the Body of Christ, us. We are to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and we are to be HIS place of rest. This is not about works; it is about obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit and fellowshipping our Father. Everything is in our time here is to be walking with God. Walking pleasing to God, God can bless us IN HIM so we can be a blessing to the Body beyond our wildest dreams.

I have stories how when God loves you, and He does, how HE takes care of HIS own! When you seek to walk in His Spirit, please Him, heaven and earth seem to by tools He uses just to ‘do for you’.  God is like that, seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you, Matthew 6.

Jesus is responsible for those He called, from Noah, Abraham, Jacob, John, Peter, John G Lake, Smith Wigglesworth, Watchman Nee and Reese Howell, there are stories of how God provides for those he called. The life we are called to live by faith, the true ministers of the Lord Jesus Christ will lead the way living IN THAT FAITH.  God is responsible for those He calls. Faith is based on hearing what God is telling you, and being obedient to His Word.

Am I saying not to give?

Give from your heart, literally and liberally as to Christ personally as HE directs, not as unto men, or as a result of men’s ‘pressure’. When you give, do it as Paul stated, as you have purposed in your heart. Give to the one who gave his all for you, and as you do, God will bless you abundantly, with Him and in Him. Let God direct your giving, help a brother, sister in the Lord as directed... Do so anonymously if possible, do not give to get a tax deduction, give as unto the Lord as HE directs and you will never lack.

If a ‘minister’ takes this understanding and requests you ‘give’ any amount, advise him you will take it under consideration. God always confirms HIS word. Your obedience is to be to the Head of the Church, Jesus Christ personally. It is not about you ‘keeping’ anything, it is about obedience. Recall what Samuel told King Saul when Saul related he had been disobedient to ‘please; the people? The excuse did not work then, or will it now.(If you do not recall,  1 Samuel 15:23).

Final thought; if the physical church was disbanded, and the weekly meetings discontinued, would your dwelling place be a convenient place for the Body to meet.

In Acts, they went from house to house, the widows were not neglected, and the ministry of Christ flourished.

Give from your heart, literally and liberally as to Christ, giving to God is contributing to the Body of Christ. No member of the Body is a ‘percentage member’! Your hands are 100% ‘you’ just as your feet are, ‘you’... we are members of His Body…
